The Importance of Legislation

The Role of Legislation in Protecting Health Services During Conflicts and Emergencies

ICRC’s Health Care in Danger initiative focuses on the adoption and implementation of legislation by states to protect health care from violence.

Background

Legislation is a cornerstone in the protection of healthcare services during conflicts and emergencies. It provides a legal framework that safeguards the rights of healthcare providers and patients alike. Through their dedicated efforts, organizations like the ICRC are actively working to ensure that states adopt and implement legislation that protects health care from violence. In doing so, they help create a safer and more secure environment where healthcare services remain accessible, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Targeting Change:

The ICRC’s strategy aims to influence five constituencies to commence legislative change in this regard, with a specific focus on two of the largest ICRC operations. This approach underscores the organization’s commitment to making a tangible impact on the protection of healthcare services worldwide.
